Plus, these exercises are simple to do, can be done from most anywhere, and only take a few minutes! Perfect for you! 1. Find a small, quiet place, where you can spend at least 5-20 minutes of your day by yourself. It doesn’t matter if this is in the morning or at night; it can be as youre starting your day in the morning, in the bathroom or the shower, during your commute to work/school in the car, back at home at night cooking dinner in the kitchen, in your bedroom, or your backyard could be an option too! It is important that you find a space where you can warm up privately alone, even if you have to go into a closet to get away from roommates or younger siblings! The point is you want to feel comfortable warming up, and not be worried about people hearing you. 2. Start with simple warm ups.  Humming is a great way to start warming up your voice, starting at a comfortable range in your voice. You do not need to overdo these vocal warm ups keep it very light and simple. You are working your muscles just as an athlete stretches his or her muscles before a game. Humming (either before an audition, or when you wake up in the morning) to see what condition your voice is in (especially if you are sick or suffering from allergies) is a great way to keep your voice strong and healthy! 3. Work on a song or your audition piece. After you have spent about 5-10 minutes on a light and easy warm up, you can move on to a song you are working on for fun or for an audition. The key is not to sing full out at first; if you are pressed for time, do a quick “mark” or run-through at half volume of the song, and then sing the song or section full out once. Some people do this right before an audition, to make sure they can hit all the notes or phrases. Singing the song full out once or twice will do minimal damage and is considered a healthy approach to warming up. Belting your song full out ten times before an audition is not effective, as by the time your audition rolls around, your voice may be extremely tired and fatigued and because you hit those notes ten minutes ago, you may not be able to hit them again, since they have been overused! 4. Do not sing in inappropriate public places. The life of an aspiring singer is often very busy and challenging, going on several auditions each day and working several different jobs. Again, I recommend finding a nice, quiet space to yourself to warm up. Oftentimes, I see people on the subway, walking down the street, waiting in line at lunch, or in school warming up at the top of their lungs (some do it to show off!). This is not healthy for your voice, and most often not comfortable for others. We all get that you are an aspiring singer, and your voice is important to you, but if you are battling the noise of subway trains moving by, or singing outside when it’s raining, or in a busy school cafeteria, your voice is going to become fatigued very soon, and you won’t really be able to hear yourself. The only exception I make is warming up in a car, if there really is no other time or place to do your daily routine. Just be careful not to get distracted! Also, many people wear he adphones when they warm up to music; this is okay to a point, but I recommend putting one earbud in your ear and keeping the other out of your ear, so you can hear the music and yourself! If you follow these simple steps, you should be able to have a more effective, quick vocal warm up as part of your daily routine in your busy schedule! Whatever the reason, know that the test is different from the regular SAT in both form and content, and that your prep for it will likely differ from any regularSAT tutoringyou may have done as well. Read on for test-day strategies for the SATSubject Test in Literature. 1. Look out for keywords in questions Read questions carefully, paying attention to keywords like verbs and nouns. These words contain the meaning of the question, and misreading or skimming can prevent you from understanding what you are actually being askedto look for. You dont want to get a question wrong simply because you were overconfident or read too fast. Remember to look for words like not, least, or except, as they completely reverse the meaning of the questions main clause but are easily missed if youre reading quickly. 2. Keep track of time Youll have 60 minutes to answer approximately 60 questions the whole of the test. Keep in mind, however, that there are six to eightreading passages throughout, so youll have even less than a minute for each question. It may help you to read the questions before reading the passage, so youll know what to focus on. For other students, this may be distracting or time-consuming, so try different methods on SAT II Literature practice tests beforehand, then use what works best for you on test day. 3. Skip and return to questions if needed If a question stumps you, it is best practice to skip and come back to it as needed. You dont want to waste precious time figuring out one hard question and miss out on the chance to answer several questions you do know. Later questions might even help jog your memory! Once you come back to questions you have skipped, try eliminating one or more choices. If you can make an educated guess, do so, but keep in mind that a wrong answer gets penalized a fraction of a point; otherwise, omit the question entirely, which neither earns nor deducts points from you. However, if you are taking the subject test starting in March of 2016, you should take an educated guess for each answer, as wrong answers will no longer be penalized. 4. Read poems especially carefully Of course, youll need to read each passage with an attentive eye. However, be especially careful with poetry; its language is often denser and can be more difficult to understand than prose. Because each word is generally weighted more in poems than in prose, think of the different meanings of the words, as well as how different connotations make up the overall tone of the poem. Consider keywords in the context of the poem not just what you know of its dictionary definition. Remember that one word can change or complicate a poems meaning and message. If youve done well in literature classes throughout most of your high school career, or have worked thoroughly with a literature tutor, it may be worth your time to demonstrate your mastery on the subject test. Be sure to study up on your literary terminology, since passages will come from a variety of genres, time periods, and cultural literary traditions. While youll need to come equipped with vocabulary, an understanding of literary concepts, and analysis skills, know that answers can be found by closely reading the text and do not require outside knowledge of specific texts. Introvert Whisperer / 9 Steps for Deciding on a Career - Introvert Whisperer 9 Steps for Deciding on a Career Often times when people talk about raising children you hear people say, “There is no owners manual that came with this child”.  I think we should broaden the saying to “We didn’t come with an owners manual on managing our life”.   For the more obvious things like managing a home and relationships, we can observe our parents and a few others for examples of what to do or to avoid.   Unfortunately, for one of the bigger decisions we make in our life â€" that being what career to pursue â€" we are on our own.  The parents didn’t talk much about career choices and we also didn’t hear that much on our path through life.   If there were 1 common approach that people use for this seriously important choice it would be that most people use job search to “find something”.  It’s like describing a mushroom hunt.  You don’t know exactly where to look, you don’t know what you will find and whether or not what you find will kill you if you eat it.   Nice.   Let me lay out the bottom-line on this:  You will spend more time working than any other thing you will do in your life, other than sleep.  If you relegate this decision to “finding something” you will become part of the 60â€"70% of workers who hate what they do for a living.   Seriously, is that what you had in mind for your life?   If I’ve got your attention, let me offer up a process to help facilitate you in making a career choice.  Notice I didn’t say find a job.   #1 â€" What looks interesting to you right now? And why? Stay open-minded, as all you are trying to do is to understand yourself and what works for you as it relates to occupations.  This is a brainstorm so anything you think of works.  The idea with this is to come up as many occupations that look at all interesting to you.  Don’t get caught up in thinking about pay or qualifications.  You simply want to think about what sounds interesting and then figure out what is it about the occupation that sounds good.  You might think being a floral designer sounds fun because you enjoy creating and artistry.   #2 â€" What do you like and dislike in the work you’re doing or have done? Make a list of both things so you have a clear idea.  Don’t add in environmental things like you didn’t like your boss or the long drive.  You can look at those things when you launch your job search.  You want to look entirely at the work you do or have done.   #3- Make a new job. From the work you did on #2, take the things you enjoyed and create a new job using only the things from the list.  You can put them together in different combinations to stimulate your thinking.  You can take just one thing and make that an entire job.  Here’s an example from my background:  as a manager, I coached people, I took that and turned it into my current profession.  Previously, I did project management as part of my job and I took that and made it my entire job at one point.   #4- Take a career assessment. This isn’t my favorite or first task I would suggest.  The reason is that people often are disappointed by what the output of an assessment is rather than to use it as one piece to an entire puzzle.  Don’t expect a clear answer because we are too complicated for an assessment to tell us exactly what to do.  I would also suggest taking the assessment and ask a career professional to work with you to help process your results.  You can learn loads and be given some career suggestions that have potential.   #5 â€" Interview friends and family. You’d be shocked at how the people who know you best see you in ways you don’t.  Sit down with these people individually to ask them what type of profession could they see you doing.  They may see potential in you that you take for granted.   #6- Brainstorm while you’re at it. While you have your friends and family with you, take them through your “like” list and do step #3.  The power of having more brains on this endeavor the better.  We get too tunnel visioned sometimes and having other people cook up jobs based on your “like” list can turn up some interesting ideas.   #7 â€" Combine and research. You now have a lot of ideas and insight about you.  You now need to roll up your sleeves and do some research. Take all the information you’ve gathered and turn it into an occupation.  A great place to start is: https://www.onetonline.org/ You can search for occupations using your various lists and then learn a wealth of information to help you decide if the occupation works for you.   #8 â€" Test So far, all of this is a theory.  You need to confirm or make your decision by speaking to people who do the occupations of most interest to you.  You should be fairly close to a decision but speaking to people doing the work will help you confirm by getting a first-hand account of the good and bad of the job.  All occupations have the good parts and bad.  You can’t avoid that but what you can avoid is going into an occupation where the bad is too big for you.   #9 â€" Make a plan. His vocal warm-up videos are great for intermediate through advanced singers. They contain unique exercises that help students move seamlessly from warming up to practicing songs and technique. He also has a number of technique videos, such as his “Riffs and Runs Masterclass”,  which pinpoints specific vocal issues in a way that is easy to understand. He encourages viewers to only do what is physically comfortable, which can be said for all vocal warm-up and technical exercises. Musictheory.net Musictheory.net has been around a while, and for good reason. It is a wonderful online resource for learning ear training and music theory. I especially like the interval, scale, and chord ear training sections for singers, because the exercises and theory can be directly applied to warm-ups and songs. Singers are musicians, too, and learning music theory is essential to becoming a successful singer! Get Body Smart Understanding how the body works is an essential part of my voice lessons. Get Body Smart is an anatomy and physiology eBook where students can learn all about the human body. For starters, visit the respiratory system section and find out how the larynx, pharynx, and lungs function. Some of the language might be a little difficult for younger singers to understand, but the images and slideshows are still extremely helpful in understanding the vocal instrument. Aside from the required, main college essay, many colleges and universities often ask for at least one more essay or short answer question. Though instructions for these supplemental essays can vary greatly, the essays usually have the general theme of why are you applying to us? The schools want to check that you are sending thoughtful, well-reasoned applications that you are not just throwing an application their way because of their strong name or location near you, for example. How do you write these essays? Here are some myths and facts about them to help you succeed. Myth: I can write one essay and just modify it for all my schools. Fact: Admissions officers know when you do that. Really. You know you have not written a deep enough answer if you can replace the schools name with another schools name and it is still 100% correct. Myth: I have not been able to visit a college due to time, finances, or distance. I cannot possibly know enough to write something strong for these essays. Fact: Not true! You can interact easily with current students via the schools websites, attend college fairs and speak to alumni, or read websites and other materials to successfully get a feel for the schools and then find great, unique reasons why you like them. With proper research, you can get the schools enough without stepping a foot on the campuses. Myth: I can just copy paste from the college website. I can spend five minutes surfing and find a class in my major or a professors name in my field to cite and show something personal about the school. Fact: Admissions officers are not impressed by web-surfing skills. In fact, they expect you to be surfing. They are impressed by the students who dig deeper to say what things actually mean to them. Is that school you want a specialist in your field, or does it send many graduates into the job you may seek after college? Does the school not just have successful sports teams, but strong team spirit and a tradition of campus unity at home games in big stadiums? Is there a special tradition there that you find interesting? What are unique academic or extracurricular programs at that school that match the activities and interests you show in your application? What is the feel of the school that you like? Does it specifically support creativity or intellectuality; is it a particularly liberal or conservative campus; does it have an emphasis on an interdisciplinary education; is it especially diverse or does it have a particularly large number of international students; is it small and community-oriented so you can get to know everybody or is it a large place where you can constantly meet new people? These things go deeper. Show why you like the things you cite. The information should be necessarily unique with each school. Myth: These supplemental essays are not so important I dont have much time and I can just throw some ideas down. Fact: Your admission may depend on these essays! At the competitive colleges at which I worked, my colleagues and I have advocated for wait-listing students whom we loved and thought belonged in the class just because they wrote poor supplemental essays. We would be disappointed, and even a bit angry, because we really wanted to enthusiastically admit the students. Sometimes we did, but sometimes we didnt. How did those students fail? They wrote essays far shorter than the suggested word limits, used interchangeable general ideas that could have applied to many colleges (especially to our competitors and the competitors names may have even appeared in the essays), and used language significantly different from and weaker than the main essays (clearly not spending time editing the supplemental essays). These are all signs that students did not take care to make thoughtful, targeted applications. So, we asked ourselves if these students liked us beyond our reputation. We fought about admitting them. Did such students, even if they were superstars, deserve spots in the class over those who proved they understood us and might be more likely to accept our offers of admission? At the end of the day, remember, admissions officers ideally want to admit students who hopefully will attend. You can prove that they have a shot at you through well-written supplemental essays. As you can see, these essays directly reflect the seriousness of your application. These essays are your one chance to say to the admissions committee, I researched your school and found out that I really like it and would love to be there! They may be the last things admissions officers read in your application, so after the readers fall in love with you, dont leave them on a sour note.
